The American Psychological Association mentioned their concern about the image and lifestyle Bratz dolls and Bratz animated series promote for 4-to-8 year olds in their “Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls” in February 2007. They believe that the miniskirts, feather boas and fishnet stockings worn by many Bratz Dolls send a distorted message about female image in the society to little girls. The report states that inappropriate media and marketing is forcing sexualization upon children. It also speaks about the negative consequences sexualisation on a girl’s healthy development and urges to a solution that would involve replacing these inappropriate models with ones that would lead to a healthy sexual development.

A spokesman for Bratz responded that the toys are designed for 11-18 year olds are not purchased by less than 8 year olds and they focus on values like friendship and “passion for fashion”. He also stated that children don’t see the dolls as sexy, but as pretty. It is arguable if this affirmation is right or wrong and it is not the case to debate Freud’s ideas about young age sexuality, but it is a known fact that, even though designed for children over 11, Bratz coloring pages are used as educational material in home school, preschool and primary school programs.

Presuming that the Bratz spokesman is right and children don’t perceive sexuality in Bratz coloring pages, isn’t it wrong to find “pretty” or fashionable clothes and makeup that even adults find inappropriate? We all know that tastes can be influenced and even formed by the education young ones receive from the society. When a 6 year old colors an image of a Bratz doll and learns that collagen-injected lips, deep cleavages and fishnet stockings mean “fashionable” and “pretty” , it is only natural for him or her to want to conform and be accepted into this society. Girls would want to be considered as “pretty” as a Bratz doll, and so she will imitate her style. Boys would see in them the image of the modern woman and think that it is normal for a girl to act and dress like that.

In conclusion, either if children realize the sexual message sent by Bratz dolls, TV show and coloring pages or not, I think that it is not normal to present these images to impressionable young ones, who will immediately understand them as the aesthetic standards of our society and want to live up to them,
